Are Emojis Annoying? (4 Ways They Become Annoying!)

Ah yes, the age-old question (well, not ‘age old’, more like, 10-year old)… Are emojis annoying?

The use of emojis has blown up in recent years.

The use of the little avatars to convey your tone, thoughts, or feelings to a friend has essentially become a whole new language in itself.

Even as a young person who uses emojis regularly, I still struggle to understand what half of them mean in a certain context – especially when they are used one after the other instead of in a regular sentence.

I truly do wonder how long I’ve spent attempting to decode the rows of animated symbols in messages and captions (just call me Alan Turing).

So, have emojis become a scourge on our social lives, reducing complex discussions to basic cartoon characters, or do they remain to be a fun and eccentric part of modern communication?

Have we taken emojis a step too far by incorporating them in almost every message we send, thus inevitably annoying the majority of our contacts, or do people feel comforted by the little icons?

If you are pondering the same questions, or you simply want to find out whether your use of emojis is off-putting, you’re in the right place.

Check out the in-depth guide on using emojis below to ensure that you aren’t that friend… you know, the one who seems utterly obsessed with eggplants or baguettes.

Ways To Prevent Your Emoji Use From Becoming Annoying

So, I think it’s pretty clear that most people enjoy using and receiving emojis from time to time. Who wouldn’t?

Those tiny little faces manage to communicate how I’m feeling way more eloquently than I can be bothered to type.

Whether you want to express frustration to a colleague over a workplace drama *insert angry emoji here*, or you’ve just need to show the world how funny you found a certain meme *insert laughing emoji here*, emojis really can be an asset.

However, there are a number of ways in which using emojis can become annoying. Trust me – it is all about context.

To ensure that you aren’t the butt of all of your friends’ jokes because of the way in which you use emojis, check out our simple rules for emoji use below.

Emojis Are NSFW (Not Safe For Work)

Now, it is first important to mention that one of the main ways in which emojis can become annoying is when they are used in a professional setting.

Whilst many of us may feel comfortable using a smiley face emoji or a thumbs-up emoji with our bosses, there is a line.

When engaging in serious conversation with colleagues, the use of emojis can come across as quite unprofessional – especially if you use emojis that might be construed as inappropriate.

If you feel comfortable using emojis at work, make sure that you’re sticking to those that are simple, positive, and easy to understand.

Please, on behalf of all of your colleagues, stay away from winky faces, eggplants, and confusing hand gestures.

Emojis Shouldn’t Replace Full Sentences

This one is my personal gripe. Emojis should be utilized as accessories in a sentence rather than a replacement for the actual words.

If, when you send a message, you have a habit of replacing the majority of your words with emojis… just stop it. Just stop. Please.

Replacing whole sentences (or the majority of them) with emojis has to be one of the most annoying ways that people use them.

Not only does it come across as immature, but it also makes the likelihood of people actually reading and responding to your messages quite slim.

Emojis Are Not Romantic

Emojis are not romantic. They are not sexy. Putting multiple winky faces at the end of a sentence will make the recipient feel as though they are talking to a teenager from 2012, which I’m sure, is not the desired effect.

If you are interested in getting to know someone, or you want to set up a date with someone, emojis should not be used very much at all.

If you want to throw a smiley face in there occasionally, that’s fine, but any more than that is likely to be annoying and off putting.

This is especially true if you are prone to using emojis that have a double meaning. Yes, I’m talking about the eggplant, the series of hand gestures, the water droplets, and the previously condemned winky face.

Emojis Shouldn’t Be Used In Deep Conversations

Picture this: You just received the terrible news that you lost your job. You contact your close friend to discuss it with them. They respond with a few sad-faced emojis. It feels a bit shallow, doesn’t it?

In times of crisis, the last thing that will provide real comfort and reassurance is a series of emojis. If someone reaches out to you for an in-depth chat, keep the emojis at bay, at least until the person is feeling better.

Conclusion

Emojis are fun, quirky little things. However, they shouldn’t be used too often, and certainly not in a professional environment.

When you do use them, make sure that they are easy to understand. And please, for the love of God, stay away from the eggplant.
