Today, almost every social media site has some sort of photo or video sharing element. It’s become so common that it’s almost cliche. But we all love a good gif. They’re simple, they have universal appeal, and they’re fun to use as well as watch.

Not long ago, Instagram introduced the ability to upload short looping videos (known as “GIFs”) to user profiles and stories, making it easier than ever for users to share them on the app. However, there was one small problem.

There was no way for users to add their own personal Gif files. Thankfully though there is a way you can add your own personal Gif file to your profile or story. In this article, we show you how.

How to Add Your Own Gif to Instagram Story

With the growing popularity of short, looping videos on Instagram, it is likely that the app will eventually add the ability to add your own GIFs. However, until then, users have to rely on other means to add GIFs to Instagram.

The easiest way to do this is to use a third-party GIF sharing app, like GIPHY, to upload your GIF as a video file, then take a screenshot of the video and save it to your phone.

Once you have the GIF saved on your phone, you can upload it to Instagram as a story or profile video. When it comes to adding your own GIF to Instagram Stories, the first step is actually saving the GIF to your phone.

You can save GIFs to your phone in any number of ways, but the simplest is to open the GIF you want to save, then tap and hold to “Share” the GIF. Select “Save Image” to save the GIF to your phone’s Camera Roll.

Note that you’ll have to do this with every GIF you want to add to Instagram Stories.

From Instagram’s Home screen, tap in the left top area on the Your Story icon.
Take a photo or add it from your gallery.
When you’ve chosen, tap on the smiley face sticker icon at the top of the next screen.

Select the GIF option from the sticker menu.

Another way to add your own GIF to Instagram Stories is to use an app called GIPHY. GIPHY is a free mobile app that allows you to search for GIFs, select the GIF of your choice, and then save it to your phone to upload to Instagram.

Open the GIPHY app on your phone.
Tap on the GIF that you want to use for your Instagram Story.
Tap the share icon in the top right corner of the GIF.

Select “Save Image” and save the GIF to your phone’s Camera Roll.
