Emojis are very popular across social media platforms and in personal messages because of their colorful and playful designs.

Is There A Subset Of Emojis? (3 Things To Know!)

They can help us to quickly show our emotions and feelings without the need for a lot of text. But are there subsets of emojis and if so, what are they?

What Are Emojis?

Emojis are colorful images and graphics that are designed to be inserted into text as easily as a letter or a number.

They are standardized across all operating systems and vendors so they can easily be read by everyone, regardless of the manufacturer of their phone or computer.

What Do We Mean By A Subset Of Emojis?

Emojis are rendered in standard colors. If you open your emoji keyboard, you will find a diverse library of facial expressions and representations of humans that are primarily yellow.

Yellow is the standard color for emojis and is a universal color as it doesn’t match any natural skin tone.

However, some emojis do have subsets that allow you to choose different variations of the main emoji.

The subsets include different colors to represent more natural skin tones instead of using unnatural yellow.

What Emojis Have A Subset?

The subsets are reserved for emojis that represent real people. The traditional face emojis that consist of a big circle and exaggerated expressions don’t have subsets as these aren’t meant to be actual representations of people.

Emojis of body parts, professions, and athletes, however, do have the subsets and allow you to choose from five different skin colors.

How Do You Access An Emoji’s Subset?

This differs depending on which operating system or application you are using. Here’s a quick guide to accessing the subset on some popular devices.

IOS

When using the standard keyboard on an iPhone or iPad, simply open the emoji keyboard and find the emoji that you want.

Then you press down on the emoji using either the iPhone’s 3D Touch (for iPhone 6 to 10) or the Haptic Touch controls (from iPhone 11 onwards.)

The subset menu will then pop up and you can choose the specific emoji you want.

Android

This is very similar to the iOS method. Open your emoji keyboard and find the emoji that you want to select.

Long press the emoji and the subset menu will then pop up. You can choose the appropriate color from the menu.

Facebook Homepage

You can change the color of emojis that you include in your Facebook posts, too. When you update your Facebook status from Facebook’s home page, there is an emoji icon on the right-hand side of the update box.

Clicking on this will bring up the emoji screen and long left-clicking on an emoji brings up the subset.

Twitter Homepage

If you want to add a colored emoji to a Tweet when you are using Twitter’s homepage, the method is a little different.

When you click into the tweet box, you will see a little emoji icon next to the options to add an image or a poll.

Click on this icon to open the emoji menu and at the bottom right of this is a yellow circle with a tick inside. By clicking on the yellow circle, you can change the color of all of your emojis at once.

Final Thoughts

Emoji subsets allow us to change the color of emojis related to people. This can help you to express yourself in a way that is more suitable and tailored to you.
