There is a wide variety of colored hearts available as standard on an emoji keyboard. These colors include red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, white, black, and brown. However, there is no plain pink heart.
Many people have wondered why there is no plain pink heart emoji and whether one will be released in the future.
In this article, we will look at why there isn’t a pink heart emoji and the chances of eventually getting one.
Why Is There No Plain Pink Heart Emoji?
When looking at the different shades used for the plain heart emojis, it’s evident that there is a large gap in the pink part of the spectrum.
The Unicode Emoji Subcommittee is responsible for suggesting the addition of new emojis and it has raised the question of the missing pink heart emoji in the past with the Unicode Technical Committee (UTC.)
It is the UTC that has the final say on emojis and confirms which new ones will be adopted.
According to a document published by the Unicode Emoji Subcommittee in 2020, the UTC said there is no pink heart emoji due to there being no universal concept of pink.
In some cultures around the world, there is no word for the color “pink” or concept of its existence. People in these cultures are therefore unable to distinguish pink from other similar colors. As pink isn’t a universal color, no pink heart emoji was created.
Will There Be A Pink Heart Emoji In The Future?
In October 2021, a recommendation for the addition of a pink heart emoji was made by the Unicode Emoji Subcommittee.
It was suggested alongside a couple of other hearts, such as a light blue heart and a gray heart,
The Unicode Technical Committee met to consider the recommendations from the Unicode Emoji Subcommittee and accepted all of their suggestions, including the pink heart.
Although the recommendation was accepted, this isn’t a guarantee that a pink heart will be included in any future emoji release. Most accepted candidates are later released, but it is not a 100 percent success rate.
When Might We See A Pink Heart Emoji?
As the recommendations were accepted in October 2021, that means that the confirmed new emojis should appear on phones in late 2022 to early 2023. If a pink heart does get approved, we should see it on our phones in that period of time.
What Pink Hearts Are Available Now?
If you want to use a pink heart on your social media or in a message to your friends, you have to use one of the elaborated pink heart emojis, instead. There are plenty of these for you to choose from.
- Sparkling pink heart
- Two pink hearts
- Growing pink heart
- Beating pink heart
- Revolving pink heart
- Pink heart with an arrow
- Pink heart with a ribbon
Depending on the phone and social media sites you use, these hearts may look more like a shade of red than they do a shade of pink.
Why Do We Need A Pink Emoji?
Some people might wonder if a pink heart emoji is needed at all with so many elaborated pink heart emojis already available.
However, people use heart emojis for a wide variety of purposes, and for some people, the lack of a pink heart is a problem.
Colored hearts are widely used across social media for identity representation. These can be to represent the colors of a gender or sexual identity flag or the colors of a local sports team.
Without a plain pink heart, these representations can’t be accurately done so many people want a plain pink heart emoji for that reason.
Final Thoughts
The lack of a plain pink heart emoji is due to there being no universal concept of what pink is.
However, in October 2021 a recommendation to create a pink heart emoji was accepted by the Unicode Technical Committee and this means we might see a pink heart emoji in late 2022 or early 2023.
